Second WIND TAMER Unit Installed at Clarkson University

Second Wind Tamer Unit Installed

One week after the first installation was completed, a second WIND TAMER Wind Turbine was installed at the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems at Clarkson University. The second unit installation was a repeat of the first, but the team also had the opportunity to install new directional stabilizers (located on the rear of the top directional fin). This refinement improves the ability of the wind generators to effectively detect and adjust to minor wind-direction changes, further enhancing the efficiency.

The installation crew made several informal observations that will be validated through the studies of Dr. Ken Visser and his group. One observation was that the steeper turbine blade pitch (on the second unit) favored a slower cut-in wind speed, suggesting that efficiency improvements can continue to optimize the turbine for production. Along with the directional stablizer enhancement, both units had spinning turbine blades in one and a half mile-per-hour winds. Considering the fact that competitive conventional wind turbines need more wind to start turning, this could prove to be a significant advantage.

Further comparative testing will be conducted as blade pitch optimization and other enhancements are pursued.
